This week transfers were complicated by the late arrival of our new missionaries. We expected two new missionaries Tuesday but because their visas were late, they arrived Friday night. Wednesday transfers were held as usual, but the two trainers (companions for the new missionaries) were assigned to be in threesomes. All the missionaries being transferred are brought by their zone leaders to Spanish Town where they meet and then go with their new zone leaders. Sister Payne, from Mesa, came to the office Wednesday afternoon. She finished her mission and went home Thursday. She told me her grandfather and many of her family were from Virden, New Mexico. I have attached a picture of the two Arizona sister missionaries.
Elder Daniels had to go very early one morning when the mission office alarm went off. He never discovered what set it off. Friday night we got new clickers to open the doors (in addition to using a key). Unfortunately we discovered Saturday when we went to the office to send the “safely here” letters for the new missionaries the new clickers are not programmed correctly. One of us has to be at the back of the building clicking to a sensor there and the other by the front door to open it when you heard the beep. The clickers have been reprogrammed and are working now.
Thursday afternoon President Hendricks was the guest speaker at United Theological College of the West Indies. He asked me to send copies of the Book of Mormon, and copies of the Living Christ and Family proclamations to them the next day at their request.
We have had a film crew from BYU-TV following one of the missionaries this week. They also filmed many of the other missionaries on transfer day. Besides sending in baptism records, typing advancement letters for the new zone leaders and trainers, and preparing immigrations papers, this week I sent in seven applications for the Temple Patron Assistance Fund.
We attached a picture of the goat herd who came just before church Sunday. A large billy goat came to the door to check things out as I was playing prelude. Gratefully he didn’t try to come in! All four children attending Primary this week are preparing for baptism. Guiliovani’s (8) two sisters were baptized in July but his father thought he wasn’t old enough. He has given permission for him now. Javon (12) and Javel’s (8) mother was baptized in August and they have been preparing since then. Sunday night Chenise’s (11) grandfather gave her permission to be baptized. We are thrilled. Tremaine Campbell just turned 12 so he and Javon won’t be in Primary anymore. Tremaine received the Aaronic Priesthood Sunday. After our meetings we made several visits to members of the branch with the missionaries. At the last visit one sister requested a blessing. We were too late getting home to make any phone calls to family that evening.
Yesterday Jeanne, in Provo, helped one of our missionaries. The sister missionary who arrived last Friday had left all her underwear at the Missionary Training Center. The mailroom clerk said they could only ship via the post office. Since she needed them as soon as possible I called Jeanne. She went and picked up the box and shipped it here. Thanks, Jeanne.
We are trying to get a work permit for a missionary to be transferred to the Bahamas. The immigrations officer requested a more current police clearance certificate. I prepared a letter authorizing his sister to act in his behalf and we sent it with his drivers license to Canada. They already had his birth certificate for the other ID. Then yesterday his sister faxed the form the police gave her when she tried to apply for the new police clearance certificate. So I emailed it to some senior missionaries near where he is serving on the other side of Jamaica. They printed it out, he signed it, they took a picture and emailed it back to me (since they didn’t have access to a fax or scanner) so I could forward it to the missionary’s sister. Hopefully we will have the new document by the end of the week to send to Bahamas immigration. I’m grateful for the technology we have to help accomplish needful tasks.
Monday for Family Home Evening we watched the second episode of the Fire of Faith series about the translation of the Bible into English. We are very grateful for the people who sacrificed so much so that we can have God’s words in our own language.
