On Monday, September 27th, we drove to Flagstaff to visit David and Lani.

That evening we enjoyed a very nice dinner in their home, and then the four of us played a couple of games: Quixx and Quidler. We then watched an Australian cooking show (My Kitchen Rules) that was new to us.

Tuesday morning we had breakfast with David and Lani, then headed home. On our way to I17 we saw this in the road. The vertical pieces look very flexible (so probably wouldn't damage anything if a vehicle ran over a few). D&L suggested wintertime snowplows may have issues getting around them, however. It's a traffic control idea somewhat reminiscent of the "sleeping policemen" (speed bumps) in Jamaica.

That evening we watched grandkids at Bryce & Amy's home, and Paul picked up Karsten from Ms. Carol's GYMKIDS. Any guesses as to what Mr. K is learning over there? We got notification of a CPAP recall, and that affected units shouldn't be used until fixed or replaced.
On Wednesday we confirmed that Shirleen's CPAP machine is one of those included in the recall, so we got it registered, and called her doctor. Paul drove Melody to & from preschool. And we went to our pharmacy, and we each got our COVID booster shot (Pfyzer, in our case - so, we've each had three "jabs" this year!). Shirleen called Leo Lines to wish him happy birthday. His kids gave him a video of his grandkids with the music from the Beatles, "When I'm 64." Appropriate!
On Thursday morning both of us went to Amy & Bryce's home. Amy went to the temple to do her first endowment session since the pandemic. Paul took Melody to preschool, and Shirleen indexed while James napped. Paul had lunch at our home, then went back to A&B's home. Shirleen had been using an iPhone as a "hotspot" for the laptop she was using, but the arrangement had stopped functioning properly before Paul got back. He managed to get it going again, but it stopped again, and he (successfully) tried another technique to get it up & running. (Today was our first attempt at using Paul's phone as a hotspot.) Then Paul left to pick up & return Melody from preschool. Amelia was back from the temple by the time Paul got back with Melody. We visited for a while, then came home. Three trips for Paul, one for Shirleen. BTW, the preschool is located a few streets north of our home. A&B are a few miles east and a few miles north of us.
On Friday Shirleen got half of the second border sewed on the quilt. That afternoon found us in the Gilbert Temple for Initiatory. Shirleen had four family names (one born in 1690 and two sisters from the 1790s); Paul received five names from the temple.
Saturday, October 2nd - the first day of General Conference. It's a remarkable and wonderful thing that we (and many others around the world) can participate remotely. We had all three sessions on TV. We always enjoy general conference. The talks seemed to focus on the basics. We appreciate the review, and love to hear the stories that help us remember the principles taught. Shirleen made some more progress on the quilt between sessions.
In the Saturday night session Brother Bradley R. Wilcox reminded us: "God's message is that repentance and change are necessary. He wants His children to improve and become all they are capable of becoming." Shirleen is grateful for second chances to improve.
Following the third conference session we went to the California Fish Grill, and took dinner home (Shirleen had salmon, Paul had shrimp).
On Sunday we watched the final two sessions of General Conference, and we were pleased to hear the name of Ned Brimley (of Ned's Krazy Sub here in Mesa, and who was on the high council when Paul was) mentioned by a general authority (Vai Sikahema, who played football at Mesa High School). Shirleen especially enjoyed Pres. Nelson's talk Sunday morning on temple service. 13 new temples were announced. So, for the last two days the conference united millions from around the world, preparing & uplifting us for the coming six months! That evening Michael & LeAnn, and Amy & Bryce & their children, came over for dinner & games & visiting. Paul, Michael, and Bryce gave Shirleen a blessing. She hasn't been sleeping well since not using the CPAP and doesn't want to have another stroke since she isn't using it. What a blessing that we have the priesthood in our home and the Lord can provide peace to us for our concerns.
Seven good days for us!
